Despite decades of medical and psychological research demonstrating the normalcy and healthiness of masturbation, self-pleasure remains shrouded in misinformation and shame. For those with anti-masturbation attitudes, post-orgasmic feelings can be interpreted and experienced as depression, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction. The purpose of this presentation is to explore this somatic phenomenon from a historical and cross-cultural perspective, and to offer clinicians effective interventions for alleviating distress associated with masturbation guilt.
